Are There Different Types of Pet Vaccinations?
There are two types of animal vaccinations - core and non-core vaccines. Core vaccines are those that your pet must receive, no matter the habits, environment, or age. Non-core vaccines are not required, but they may be recommended depending on your pet’s health, environment, and lifestyle. Here at Angel Oak Animal Hospital, we can administer both core and non-core pet vaccinations on Johns Island, SC.

What are Core Dog Vaccinations?
We offer core vaccines for your dogs and puppies. These vaccines are necessary either annually or every three years, depending on your veterinarian’s recommendation. If not vaccinated, your dog is vulnerable to diseases that have significant morbidity and mortality, and in almost all cases, vaccines offer great protection. The core vaccines are canine distemper virus (CDV), canine parvovirus (CPV), canine adenovirus (CAV), rabies and Leptospirosis(Lepto).
What are Non-Core Dog Vaccines?
These dog vaccines on Johns Island are not legally required but are highly recommended based on your pet’s lifestyle and risk of exposure. Non-core vaccines include the canine influenza virus (CIV) and Lyme disease. We also strongly recommend the Bordetella (kennel cough) vaccine for all dogs, as we frequently see cases of kennel cough in our community.
What are Core Cat Vaccinations?
Angel Oak Animal Hospital offers kitten and cat vaccines as well. Most of these are recommended annually to tri-annually to keep your cat healthy. The Core Feline Vaccinations include feline calicivirus (FCV), feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV1), feline panleukopenia (FPL), rabies, and while its not categorizewd as a core vaccine, feline leukemia (FeLV) is highly recommended for cats under 2 years of age.
What are Non-Core Cat Vaccinations?
The non-core feline vaccinations on Johns Island are optional and depend on your cat’s age, lifestyle, and risk of exposure. At Angel Oak Animal Hospital, the main non-core vaccine we recommend is the feline leukemia virus (FeLV) vaccine, especially for young cats or those who spend time outdoors. Pet vaccines are essential starting from kittenhood, helping your cat live a long, healthy life.
